Am I the only who gets stupidly happy when you know you’ve saved a fly’s life? Has anyone else saved a fly? I’ve done it a number of times. Once in a while one of those really tiny, mini flies ends up in my house. I don’t know how. They just appear. Maybe once a year or something. So today I just found 2010’s fly. I went into the kitchen for a drink and spotted what looked like a dead fly in the sink. There was a bit of water in the sink. I usually tip the water from my hot water bottle in there when it’s cold. I thought ‘Oh no, that fly looks dead’. I hopefully thought maybe if I scooped him out he just may have a chance of life though. Maybe he wasn’t dead, even though he looked it. I’ve done it before and the fly lived. So I got the nearest thing I could find, a knife off the plate I’d just eaten with and scooped him up with the end of the knife. Put the knife on the side, went into the toilet and got a sheet of toilet paper to see if I could blot away any excess water that might help him (or her). He didn’t seem to be moving, but I still hoped…
I then decided I’d just leave the knife on the side, and hoped that later I’d come back and he’d be gone… having felt better, got up, and moved.
And guess what. He did. I went back half an hour or so later, looked at the knife, and yes… shockingly he’d gone! The end of the knife had nothing on it. No-one else is here so the only way he would have gone would be if he’d moved by himself.
I was so happy. I love the feeling that I saved a life. I helped that fly. Most people would have tipped the water, with him, down the sink. Most people wouldn’t care about the life of a fly. But I got him out, and he’s alive. It’s so amazing knowing that you’ve saved a life.
If you’ve never done it, try it. If you ever see what looks like a dead fly in water, scoop him out and save him. I swear they must be like cats and have nine lives. Even if they look dead, if you help them they just may come back to life.
